The late Professor J. Howard Wert, a veteran of Gettysburg |
How it came to be -
Representative Harry Readshaw read about the condition of the monuments at Gettysburg. As a Marine veteran , he decided to see what he could do. Determination achieved results.
After a few months, the issue was addressed by a House Resolution, calling for a committee to assist in raising the needed funds. Then GBPA came forward and became fully involved in this effort.
Since 1997, Mrs. Kathi Schue and Craig Caba have co-chaired the GBPA's Monument Committee.
The call to save the monuments was given by Readshaw throughout Pennsylvania. Originally the National Park listed 111 monuments, but with the Civil War community's assistance, 146 regimental monuments and the Pennsylvania Memorial were located. A detailed historic, photographic, and condition assessment study documented these artistic treasures.
Many historical groups, schools, businesses, public officials, scouts, individuals, the PSEA, senior citizens, and children have come forward to raise funds. The grassroots campaign has had much success, but the job is not finished. Many of the monuments need endowments to insure perpetual care for the future.
"After a century of weathering, the need for
repairs and restoration is critical."
The goal for the
Pennsylvania Monuments endowment fund
has been set at $431,000.
The fund raising campaign is a continuing effort.
Your help, generosity, and contributions are deeply appreciated.
