Christmas Tour - December 9, 2006
The aroma of Christmas cookies was in the air,
the needles were busy threading cranberry and popcorn garlands,
the window sills were decorated with pine and the table was
set with the silver and best china as we entertained guests
at the Daniel Lady Farm for the Annual Inns of Gettysburg
Christmas Tour which allowed the public to get a close look
at how homes were decorated for the holidays during the 1860s.
While it is not used for public lodging, the Lady farmhouse
was included in the tour because of the intense public interest
in our two-story stone residence, which dates back to the
1820s and was used as a Confederate field hospital during
the 1863 battle.
Civilians of the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry provided
a Christmastime living history tableau for hundreds of visitors
who got their first look inside -- the Christmas theme juxtaposed
with wood floors still stained by the blood of wounded and
dying Confederates.
